കൂട്ടിലടച്ച പ്രാവ് , താൻ മുട്ടയിട്ടു വിരിയിച്ച കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം പറഞ്ഞു മേനി നടിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇത് കേട്ട കാക്ക പറഞ്ഞു “മതി നിന്റെയൊരു വമ്പു പറച്ചിൽ. നിന്റെ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം ഏറും തോറും അവയും നിന്നെ പോലെ ഈ കാരാഗ്രഹത്തിൽ തന്നെ കഴിയുന്നതോർത്ത് നിന്റെ ദുഖവും ഏറുകയല്ലേ.?”

REFLEXION.

THE Care, Charge, and Hazzard of a Brood of many Children, in the Education and Proof of them, does, in a Great Measure, Countervail the Blessing: Especially where they are gotten in a State of Slavery. Sorrow and Vexation is Entail’d upon the whole Race of Mankind. We are Begotten to't; We are Born to't; and as it has Descended to us, so it is by us to be Handed down to Those that come after us. The Stress of the Fable lies upon the Hazzard of having a Numerous Stock of Children, which must of Necessity, whether they Live or Dye, furnish Matter of Great Anxiety to the Parents. The Loss of them is Grievous to us. The Miscarriage of them, by falling into Lew'd and Vicious Courses, is much Worse: And one such Disappointment is sufficient to Blast the Comfort of All the Rest. Nay the very Possibility, or rather the Likelihood and Odds, that some out of such a Number will Prove Ungracious and Rebellious, makes our Heads Uneasie to us; Fills our Heads and our Hearts with Carking Thoughts, and keeps us in Anxiety Night and Day for fear they should be so, and prove like Vipers, to Eat out the Belly of their Own Mothers.

A Dove shut up in a cage was boasting of the large number of the young ones which she had hatched. A Crow hearing her, said: "My good friend, cease from this unseasonable boasting. The larger the number of your family, the greater your cause of sorrow, in seeing them shut up in this prison-house."

പുൽത്തൊട്ടിലിലെ നായ / The Dog in the Manger

ഒരു നായ ഒരു ദിനം ഉച്ചയുറക്കത്തിനായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത് ഒഴിഞ്ഞു കിടന്ന കാലിത്തൊഴിത്തിലെ പുൽത്തൊട്ടിയാണ്. വൈകുന്നെരമായപ്പോൾ ജോലിയെല്ലാം കഴിഞ്ഞു തൊഴുത്തിലെത്തിയ കാള വൈക്കോൽ ഭക്ഷിക്കാൻ പുൽത്തൊട്ടിയെ സമീപ്പിച്ചപ്പോൾ നായയുണ്ടോ സമ്മതിക്കുന്നു.
കുരച്ചും കൊണ്ട് നായ, കാളയെ അകറ്റി നിർത്തി. വിശന്നു മടങ്ങവേ കാള പിറുപിറുത്തു: "ചിലർ ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്, തിന്നുകയുമില്ല, തിന്നാനൊട്ടു സമ്മതിക്കുകയുമില്ല"

The Dog in the Manger

A Dog lay in a manger, and by his growling and snapping prevented the oxen from eating the hay which had been placed for them. "What a selfish Dog!" said one of them to his companions; "he cannot eat or sleep in the hay himself, and yet refuses to allow those to eat who can."

ആമയും മുയലും

 

മൃഗങ്ങളെല്ലാം കൂടിയിരിക്കവെ ഒരിക്കൽ മുയൽ വീമ്പിളക്കി. "ഞാനാണ് കാട്ടിലെ വേഗക്കാരൻ. ഓട്ടപ്പന്തയത്തിൽ എന്നെ തോൽപ്പിക്കാൻ ആരുണ്ടിവിടെ?"
ആരും മിണ്ടാതിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ അതാ ഒരുത്തരം. "വെല്ലുവിളി ഞാൻ ഏറ്റെടുക്കുന്നു". നോക്കിയപ്പോൾ ആമയാണ് വെല്ലുവിളി ഏറ്റെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്.
"നീയോ!" മുയൽ പുച്ഛത്തോടെ പറഞ്ഞു "എന്തായാലും ശരി മൽസരം നടക്കട്ടെ."
മൽസരദിനം വന്നെത്തി. മൽസരം ആരംഭിച്ച ഉടൻ തന്നെ മുന്നോട്ട് കുതിച്ച മുയൽ ആമയെ അതിദൂരം പിന്നിലാക്കി. മുയൽ വിചാരിച്ചു "ഇവൻ ഇപ്പോഴൊന്നും എത്തില്ല. ഞാൻ ഇവിടെ ഇരുന്നൊന്നു സുഖമായി ഉറങ്ങി സാവധാനം പോയാലും മതിയല്ലോ."
ചൂടും ക്ഷീണവും കാരണം, മുയലിന്റെ മയക്കം നിദ്രയായി. അവൻ നന്നായി ഉറക്കത്തിലാണ്ടപ്പോളാണ് ആമയുടെ വരവ്. ആമ മെല്ലെയാണെങ്കിലും നിർത്താതെ ഓട്ടം തുടർന്നു. ഉറക്കമുണർന്ന മുയൽ കാണുന്നത് ലക്ഷ്യസ്ഥാനത്തിനടുത്ത് നിൽക്കുന്ന ആമയെയാണ്. മുയൽ കുതിച്ചെത്താൻ ശ്രമിച്ചെങ്കിലും, ആമ മൽസരം ജയിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.

ഗുണപാഠം: :അഹങ്കാരി പരിഹാസ്യനാവും. മെല്ലെ തിന്നാൽ മുള്ളും തിന്നാം

The Hare and the Tortoise

A Hare one day ridiculed the short feet and slow pace of the Tortoise, who replied, laughing: "Though you be swift as the wind, I will beat you in a race." The Hare, believing her assertion to be simply impossible, assented to the proposal; and they agreed that the Fox should choose the course and fix the goal. On the day appointed for the race the two started together. The Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course. The Hare, lying down by the wayside, fell fast asleep. At last waking up, and moving as fast as he could, he saw the Tortoise had reached the goal, and was comfortably dozing after her fatigue.

Moral: Slow but steady wins the race / Plodding wins the race.

നായയും എല്ലിൻ കഷ്ണവും / The Dog and Its Reflection

നായയും പ്രതിബിംബവും

 

ഭക്ഷണം തേടിയിറങ്ങിയ നായക്ക് ഒരെല്ലിൻ കഷണം കിട്ടി. അതും കടിച്ചു പിടിച്ചു കൊണ്ടു വീട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ ഒരു പാലം കടക്കേണ്ടിവന്നു.
പാലത്തിലൂടെ നടക്കവേ തന്റെ പ്രതിബിംബം വെള്ളത്തിൽ കണ്ട നായ, അത് എല്ലിൻ കഷണവുമായി നിൽക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു നായയാണെന്ന് ധരിച്ചു. ആ എല്ലും കൂടി കരസ്ഥമാക്കാനായി നായ കുരച്ചുംകൊണ്ട് മറ്റെ നായക്കുനേരെ ചാടി. ഉള്ളതും പോയി. വെള്ളവുംകുടിച്ചു.

ഗുണപാഠം: അത്യാഗ്രഹം ആപത്ത് വരുത്തും.

The Dog and the Shadow

 It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.

 The Moral : Beware lest you lose the substance by grasping at the shadow. /

ഉറുമ്പും പുൽച്ചാടിയും

 

അത് വേനൽക്കാലം ആയിരുന്നു. പുൽച്ചാടി പാടത്തു തുള്ളിക്കളിച്ച് പാട്ടുപാടി മതിമറന്നാഹ്ലാദിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഒരു ധാന്യമണി തന്റെ കൂട്ടിലേക്ക് കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് വലിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു പോകുകയായിരുന്ന ഉറുമ്പ് ആ വഴി കടന്നുപോയി.
"ഇങ്ങനെ കഷ്ടപ്പെടാതെ," പുൽച്ചാടി ചോദിച്ചു, "നിനക്കെന്താ എന്നോടൊത്തു കളിച്ചാൽ?"
"ഞാൻ മഞ്ഞുകാലത്തേക്ക് ഭക്ഷണം ശേഖരിക്കുകയാണ്", ഉറുമ്പ് പറഞ്ഞു. "നീയും അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്താൽ നന്നായിരിക്കും".
"മഞ്ഞുകാലത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് എന്തിനു പ്രയാസപ്പെടണം?" പുൽച്ചാടി ചോദിച്ചു, "നമുക്കിപ്പോൾ ധാരാളം ഭക്ഷണമുണ്ടല്ലോ." പക്ഷെ ഉറുമ്പ് തന്റെ പ്രയത്നം തുടർന്നു.
മഞ്ഞുകാലം വന്നു. പുൽച്ചാടി പട്ടിണി കിടന്നു ചാകാറായി. ഉറുമ്പുകൾ തങ്ങൾ ശേഖരിച്ച ഭക്ഷണം എന്നും വിതരണം ചെയ്യുന്നത് അവൻ കണ്ടു. അപ്പോളവനു മനസ്സിലായി:

ഗുണപാഠം: സമ്പത്ത് കാലത്ത് തൈ പത്തുവെച്ചാൽ ആപത്ത് കാലത്ത് കാ പത്തു തിന്നാം.

In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest.
"Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?"
"I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same."
"Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; we have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew:
It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.

The Moral : Idleness is a curse.

ദൈവവും വണ്ടിക്കാരനും / Hercules and the Wagoner

ദൈവവും വണ്ടിക്കാരനും

ഭാരമേറിയ ചരക്കുമായി പോകുകയായിരുന്ന കുതിരവണ്ടി ചളിക്കുണ്ടിൽ പൂണ്ടുപോയി .വണ്ടിക്കാരൻ കുതിരകളെക്കൊണ്ട് ആഞ്ഞു വലിപ്പിച്ചെങ്കിലും വണ്ടി കൂടുതൽ ആഴത്തിലേക്ക് പൂണ്ടതേയുള്ളൂ. ഒടുവിൽ വണ്ടിക്കാരൻ ചാട്ടവാർ വലിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞ് താഴെയിറങ്ങി , മുട്ടുകുത്തി ദൈവത്തോട് പ്രാർത്ഥിച്ചു.”ദൈവമേ എന്റെയീ വിഷമഘട്ടത്തിൽ എന്നെ നീ സഹായിക്കണമേ”
അപ്പോൾ ദൈവം അരുളി “ഹേ മനുഷ്യാ ! അലസനായി അവിടെ ഇരിക്കാതെ, എഴുന്നെറ്റ് നിന്റെ ശക്തിയുപയോഗിച്ച് വണ്ടി തള്ളൂ”

ഗുണപാഠം: സ്വയം സഹായിക്കാത്തവരെ ദൈവം സഹായിക്കുകയില്ല.

Hercules and the Wagoner
A carter was driving a wagon along a country lane, when the wheels sank down deep into a rut. The rustic driver, stupefied and aghast, stood looking at the wagon, and did nothing but utter loud cries to Hercules to come and help him. Hercules, it is said, appeared and thus addressed him: "Put your shoulders to the wheels, my man. Goad on your bullocks, and never more pray to me for help, until you have done your best to help yourself, or depend upon it you will henceforth pray in vain."

THE MORAL. Self-help is the best help.

കുഴലൂതിയ മുക്കുവന്‍ / A Fisherman and His Bagpipe

ഓടക്കുഴല്‍പ്രിയനായ ഒരു മുക്കുവന്‍ താന്‍ വലിയ സംഗീതജ്ഞനാണെന്ന ധരിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഒരു നാള്‍ അയാള്‍ വലയും കുഴലുമെടുത്ത് മീന്‍ പിടിക്കാനൊരുങ്ങി. വല നദിയുടെ വക്കില്‍ വിരിച്ച് അവിടെ കണ്ട ഒരു പാറപ്പുറത്തു കയറി നിന്ന് അയാള്‍ കുഴലൂത്ത് നടത്തി. സംഗീതം കേട്ട് മീനുകള്‍ തനിയെ വലയിലേക്ക് വന്നു കയറികൊള്ളും എന്നയാള്‍ കരുതി. എന്നാല്‍ നേരം ഏറെ ചെന്നിട്ടും ഒരു മല്‍സ്യം .പോലും വലയില്‍ വീണില്ല. ഒടുവില്‍ അയാള്‍ വലയെടുത്ത് നദിയില്‍ ആഞ്ഞു വീശി. വളരെയധികം മല്‍സ്യങ്ങള്‍ ആ വലയില്‍ കുടുങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു. മരണ പിടച്ചില്‍ പിടയ്ക്കുന്ന മല്‍സ്യങ്ങളെ നോക്കി അയാള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.
”വിഡ്ഢി ജന്തുകള്‍ . ഞാന്‍ ശ്രുതി മീട്ടിയപ്പോള്‍ ഒറ്റയൊന്നു പോലും നൃത്തം ചെയ്യാന്‍ വന്നില്ല. ഇപ്പോള്‍ സംഗീതമില്ലാതെ തന്നെ എന്തൊരു ആവേശത്തിലാണ് തുള്ളുന്നത്. !!

ഗുണപാഠം: അറിയാത്ത തൊഴിലുകള്‍ ചെയ്യാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത് നിഷ്ഫലമായിരിക്കും.

 A fisherman skilled in music took his flute and his nets to the seashore. Standing on a projecting rock, he played several tunes in the hope that the fish, attracted by his melody, would of their own accord dance into his net, which he had placed below. At last, having long waited in vain, he laid aside his flute, and casting his net into the sea, made an excellent haul of fish. When he saw them leaping about in the net upon the rock he said: "O you most perverse creatures, when I piped you would not dance, but now that I have ceased you do so merrily."

 THE MORAL. There are certain Rules and Methods for the doing of all Things in this World; and therefore let every Man stick to the Business he understands, and was brought up to, without making one Profession interfere with another.

ചെന്നായും കൊക്കും

തൊണ്ടയിൽ എല്ലിൻ കഷണം കുടുങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ ചെന്നായ് കൊക്കിനെ സമീപിച്ച് തന്റെ വായിൽ തലയിട്ട് എല്ലിൻ കഷണം നീക്കി തരണമെന്നപേക്ഷിച്ചു. വൻ തുക പ്രതിഫലമായി വാഗ്ദാനം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു.
കൊക്ക് എല്ലിൻ കഷണം നീക്കം ചെയ്ത് ശേഷം തന്റെ പ്രതിഫലം ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ചെന്നായ് പൊട്ടിച്ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു.
“ഒരു ചെന്നായുടെ വായിൽ നിന്നും ജീവനോടെ തലയൂരാൻ അനുവദിച്ചതിൽ പരം പ്രതിഫലം വേറെന്താണുള്ളത്?”

ഗുണപാഠം: ദുഷ്ടന്മാരെ സഹായിക്കുമ്പോൾ പ്രതിഫലം പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കരുത്. ഉപദ്രവമേൽക്കാതിരിക്കുന്നത് തന്നെ ഭാഗ്യമായി കരുതുക.

 

The Wolf and the Crane
A Wolf had been gorging on an animal he had killed, when suddenly a small bone in the meat stuck in his throat and he could not swallow it. He soon felt terrible pain in his throat, and ran up and down groaning and groaning and seeking for something to relieve the pain. He tried to induce every one he met to remove the bone. "I would give anything," said he, "if you would take it out." At last the Crane agreed to try, and told the Wolf to lie on his side and open his jaws as wide as he could. Then the Crane put its long neck down the Wolf's throat, and with its beak loosened the bone, till at last it got it out.
"Will you kindly give me the reward you promised?" said the Crane.
The Wolf grinned and showed his teeth and said: "Be content. You have put your head inside a Wolf's mouth and taken it out again in safety; that ought to be reward enough for you."

MORAL: In serving the wicked, expect no reward, and be thankful if you escape injury for your pains.
 

പൂവൻ കോഴിയും വജ്രക്കല്ലും

ഭക്ഷണം തേടി നിലം മാന്തുകയായിരുന്ന പൂവൻ കോഴിക്ക് കിട്ടിയത് ഒരു വജ്രക്കല്ലായിരുന്നു. ശോഭിക്കുന്ന രത്നത്തോട് പൂവൻ കോഴി പറഞ്ഞു
“നിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥനായിരുന്നു നിന്നെ കണ്ടെടുത്തതെങ്കിൽ ഏറ്റവും മുന്തിയ സ്ഥാനം നിനക്ക് കല്പിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ എനിക്ക് നിന്നെ കൊണ്ട് ഒരു ഗുണവുമില്ല. ലോകത്തിലെ എല്ലാ വജ്രത്തെക്കാളും ഞാൻ വിലമതിക്കുന്നത് ഒരൊറ്റ നെൽക്കതിരിനെയാണ്.”

ഗുണപാഠം: മൂല്യമറിയുന്നവനേ അമൂല്യത കൽപ്പിക്കാനാവൂ.

The Cock and the Pearl
A cock was once strutting up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he espied something shinning amid the straw. "Ho! ho!" quoth he, "that's for me," and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw. What did it turn out to be but a Pearl that by some chance had been lost in the yard? "You may be a treasure," quoth Master Cock, "to men that prize you, but for me I would rather have a single barley-corn than a peck of pearls."

Moral : Precious things are for those that can prize them.

ബാലനും വെട്ടുകിളികളും

വെട്ടുകിളികളെ പിടിക്കുകയായിരുന്ന ഒരു ബാലൻ അവയുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഒരു തേളിനേയും വെട്ടുകിളിയെന്നു തെറ്റിദ്ധരിച്ച്, പിടിക്കാനായി കൈനീട്ടി. അപ്പോൾ തന്റെ വിഷകൊമ്പുകൾ നീട്ടി തേൾ വിലക്കി “നീ എന്നെ ഒന്നു തൊടുക പോലും ചെയ്തിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ നിനക്ക് എന്നെയും, വെട്ടുകിളികളേയും കിട്ടാതെ പോകുമായിരുന്നു.“
 
ഗുണപാഠം: ശ്രദ്ധ ഇല്ലയിമയ്ക്ക് / ചിന്തികാതെ എടുക്കുന്ന തിരുമാനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക്  വലിയ വില നല്‍കേണ്ടി വരും

The Boy Hunting Locusts
A boy was hunting for locusts. He had caught a goodly number, when he saw a Scorpion, and mistaking him for a locust, reached out his hand to take him. The Scorpion, showing his sting, said: "If you had but touched me, my friend, you would have lost me, and all your locusts too!"

Moral: Carelessness has consequences.

ഐകമത്യം മഹാബലം

ഒരു കൃഷിക്കാരനു നാലുമക്കളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.എന്നാൽ അവർ തമ്മിൽ എന്നും വഴക്കായിരുന്നു.പിതാവിന്റെ ഉപദേശങ്ങൾക്കോ , ശകാരങ്ങൾക്കോ ഒന്നും അവരെ രമ്യതയിലെത്തിക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. ഒരിക്കൽ പിതാവ് അവരോട് കുറെ വിറകുകൊള്ളികൾ ശേഖരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു വരുവാൻ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ശേഖരിക്കപ്പെട്ട വിറകുകൊള്ളികൾ ഒന്നിച്ചു കൂട്ടിക്കെട്ടി ഒരു വലിയ കെട്ടാക്കിയിട്ട് പിതാവ് മക്കളോടു പറഞ്ഞു."നിങ്ങൾ ഈ കെട്ട് വിറകു ഒന്ന് പൊട്ടിക്കൂ".
മക്കൾ ഒരോരുത്തരായി ആ കെട്ടിലെ വിറകു ഒടിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചുനോക്കി.സാധിക്കാതെ വന്നപ്പോൾ അവർ ഒരുമിച്ചു ശ്രമിച്ചു . എന്നിട്ടും സാധിച്ചില്ല.
അപ്പോൾ പിതാവ് ആ കെട്ടഴിച്ചു , വിറകുകൊള്ളികൾ ഒന്നൊന്നായി എടുത്ത് മക്കൾക്കു കൊടുത്തിട്ട് അത് ഒടിക്കാൻ പറഞ്ഞു.ഏവർക്കും അത് നിഷ്പ്രയാസം സാധിച്ചു. ആ പിതാവ് മക്കളോട് പറഞ്ഞു, "നിങ്ങൾ ഓരോരുത്തരും വെവ്വേറെ നിന്നാൽ ആർക്കും നിങ്ങളെ തോല്പിക്കാൻ സാധിക്കും.എന്നാൽ ഒറ്റക്കെട്ടായി നിന്നാൽ ഏതു ശക്തരേയും നിങ്ങൾക്കു നേരിടാം".

ഗുണപാഠം: ഐകമത്യം മഹാബലം

A father had a family of sons who were perpetually quarreling among themselves. When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it. He next opened the faggot, took the sticks separately, one by one, and again put them into his sons' hands, upon which they broke them easily. He then addressed them in these words: "My sons, if you are of one mind, and unite to assist each other, you will be as this faggot, uninjured by all the attempts of your enemies; but if you are divided among yourselves, you will be broken as easily as these sticks."

അലക്കുകാരനും കൊല്ലനും

തന്റെ ആലായത്തിൽ തന്നെ വസിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു കൊല്ലനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒരു നാൾ അയാൾ തന്റെ സുഹൃത്തായിരുന്ന അലക്കുക്കാരനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി. കൊല്ലൻ പറഞ്ഞു"നീ എന്നോടൊപ്പം വന്നു താമസിക്കൂ.നമ്മൾക്ക് കൂടുതൽ നല്ല സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുമാകാം, ഒരുമിച്ചു കഴിയുമ്പോൾ ചിലവ് കുറഞ്ഞുമിരിക്കും"
അലക്കുകാരൻ പറഞ്ഞു "അതു നടക്കാത്ത കാര്യമാണ് . ഞാൻ കഴുകി വെളുപ്പിക്കുന്നതെല്ലാം നിന്റെ ആലയത്തിലെ കൽക്കരികൊണ്ട് നീ കറുപ്പിച്ച് നാശമാക്കും "

എലിയും സിംഹവും

ഉറങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന സിംഹത്തിന്റെ ദേഹത്തേക്ക് എന്തോ ഒരു സാധനം വീണതായി തോന്നി അവൻ ഉറക്കം ഉണർന്നു. ഒരെലിയായിരുന്നു. അബദ്ധത്തിൽ സിംഹത്തിന്റെ ദേഹത്തേക്ക് വീണത്. നിദ്രാഭംഗം മൂലം ക്ഷുഭിതനായ സിംഹം എലിയെ ഞെക്കിക്കൊല്ലാൻ ഒരുങ്ങി. പ്രാണരക്ഷാർഥം മൂഷികൻ കേണു. "രാജൻ കനിവുണ്ടാകണം.എന്നെ കൊല്ലരുതേ.എന്നെങ്കിലും എന്നെ കൊണ്ട് അങ്ങേയ്ക്ക് പ്രയോജനം ഉണ്ടാവും." ഇത് കേട്ടു സിംഹം പൊട്ടിച്ചിരിച്ചു. എങ്കിലും ദയ തോന്നി എലിയെ വെറുതെ വിട്ടു.
നാളുകൾ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ഒരു ദിവസം സിംഹം ഒരു വേടന്റെ വലയിൽ പെട്ടു.വലയിൽ കിടന്നു പ്രാണഭയത്താൽ അലറിയ സിംഹത്തിന്റെ കരച്ചിൽ അടുത്തുള്ള എലി കേൾക്കാനിടയായി. തന്നെ ജീവനോടെ വിട്ടയച്ച സിംഹമാണ് അപകടത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നതെന്ന് അവന് മനസ്സിലായി. ഉടൻ തന്നെ അവൻ സിംഹത്തിന്റെ അടുത്തെത്തി. ഏറെ അദ്ധ്വാനത്തിനു ശേഷം വലയുടെ കണ്ണികളെല്ലാം കടിച്ചുമുറിച്ചു സിംഹത്തെ മോചിപ്പിച്ചു.
എന്നിട്ട് അവൻ സിംഹത്തോടായി പറഞ്ഞു."എന്നെക്കൊണ്ട് ഉപകാരമുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് ഞാൻ പണ്ടു പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അങ്ങ് പരിഹസിക്കുകയായിരുന്നല്ലോ.ഇപ്പോൾ താങ്കൾക്ക് പ്രത്യുപകാരം ചെയ്യാൻ നിസ്സാരനായ എനിക്ക് സാധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.

The Lion and the Mouse
Once when a Lion was asleep a little Mouse began running up and down upon him; this soon wakened the Lion, who placed his huge paw upon him, and opened his big jaws to swallow him. "Pardon, O King," cried the little Mouse: "forgive me this time, I shall never forget it: who knows but what I may be able to do you a turn some of these days?" The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the Mouse being able to help him, that he lifted up his paw and let him go. Some time after the Lion was caught in a trap, and the hunters who desired to carry him alive to the King, tied him to a tree while they went in search of a waggon to carry him on. Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad plight in which the Lion was, went up to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the King of the Beasts. "Was I not right?" said the little Mouse.

കഴുതയും പുൽച്ചാടികളും

പുൽച്ചാടികളുടെ ചിലപ്പ് കേൾക്കാനിടയായ കഴുതയ്ക്ക് അവ മധുരസ്വരമായി അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. അത് പോലെ ശ്രുതിമീട്ടാൻ അവനു പൂതിയായി. എന്തു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചിട്ടാണ് ഇത്രയും മാധുര്യമാർന്ന സ്വരം ലഭിക്കുന്നതെന്നവൻ പുൽച്ചാടികളോട് തിരക്കി. പ്രഭാത മഞ്ഞു തുള്ളികൾ മാത്രമാണ് തങ്ങൾ കഴിക്കുന്നതെന്നവർ പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ആ ഭക്ഷണം മാത്രം കഴിക്കാൻ കഴുത തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അധികം താമസിയാതെ വിശന്നു ചാവുകയും ചെയ്തു.

The Ass and the Grasshopper  

 An Ass having heard some Grasshoppers chirping was highly enchanted; and, desiring to possess the same charms of melody, demanded what sort of food they lived on to give them such beautiful voices. They replied, "The dew." The Ass resolved that he would live only upon dew, and in a short time died of hunger.

 

വവ്വാലും കീരികളും

മരത്തിൽ നിന്നും താഴെ വീണ ഒരു വവ്വാൽ അകപ്പെട്ടത് ഒരു കീരിയുടെ കൈകളിലാണ്. തന്നെ കൊല്ലരുതെന്ന് അവൻ കിരീയോട് കേണപേക്ഷിച്ചു. അപേക്ഷ നിരസിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് കീരി പറഞ്ഞു "എല്ലാ പക്ഷികളും എന്റെ ജന്മ ശത്രുക്കളാണ്"
അയ്യോ ഞാൻ പക്ഷിയല്ല ഞാനൊരെലിയാണ് " എന്ന് വവ്വാൽ പറഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അത് ശരിയാണെന്നു തോന്നിയ കീരി അവനെ വെറുതെ വിട്ടു.
ഏതാനും ദിവസങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അതേ വവ്വാൽ മറ്റൊരു കീരിയുടെ കൈയ്യിലകപ്പെട്ടു. വീണ്ടും ജീവനു വേണ്ടി കേണപ്പോൾ ആ കീരി പറഞ്ഞു "എലികൾ പണ്ടേ എന്റെ ജന്മ ശത്രുക്കളാണ്"
"അയ്യോ ഞാൻ എലിയല്ല ഞാൻ കിളിയാണ് "എന്നു പറഞ്ഞ വവ്വാൽ രണ്ടാമതും രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു.

ചെന്നായും ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടിയും

കൂട്ടം തെറ്റി അലയുകയായിരുന്ന ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടിയെ കണ്ട ചെന്നായി അതിനെ കൊന്നു തിന്നുവാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.
എന്നാലതിനെ കൊല്ലാൻ ഒരു കാരണം കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ട് മതി ശാപ്പിടാൻ എന്നു ചെന്നായ് ഉറപ്പിച്ചു.
അവൻ ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടിയെ സമീപിച്ചു ഇപ്രകാരം പറഞ്ഞു "എടാ കുഞ്ഞേ ! കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷം നീ എന്നെ അപമാനിച്ചില്ലേ?"
ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടിയാകട്ടെ വ്യസനപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ട് മൊഴിഞ്ഞു "ഞാൻ ജനിച്ചിട്ട് മാസങ്ങളേ ആയിട്ടുള്ളൂ. കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷം ഞാൻ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല"
ചെന്നായ് ആരോപണം മാറ്റി "ഞാൻ ഇരപ്പിടിക്കുന്ന മേച്ചിൽ പുറങ്ങളിലാണ് നീ മേയുന്നത് "എന്നായി ചെന്നായ്
"ഇല്ല അങ്ങുന്നേ. ഞാനിതേവരെ പുല്ലു കഴിക്കാറായിട്ടില്ല " ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടി പറഞ്ഞു
ഞാൻ കുടിക്കുന്ന ഉറവയിൽ നിന്നാണ് നീ കുടിക്കുന്നത് എന്നായി ചെന്നായിയുടെ അടുത്ത ആരോപണം"
ഞാനിന്നേവരെ അമ്മയുടെ പാലല്ലാതെ ഒന്നും കുടിച്ചിട്ടില്ല . പാലു മാത്രമാണ് എനിക്കു ഭക്ഷണവും പാനിയവും "ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടി ഉണർത്തിച്ചു.
ഇതോടെ ആരോപണങ്ങൾ മതിയാക്കിയ ചെന്നായ് ആട്ടിൻ കുട്ടിയെ കൊന്നു ശാപ്പിട്ടു കൊണ്ട് പറഞ്ഞു "എന്റെ ആരോപണങ്ങൾക്കൊല്ലാം നിനക്ക് മറുപടിയുണ്ടായിരിക്കാം. എന്നാലിന്നു അത്താഴപ്പട്ടിണി കിടക്കാൻ എനിക്കുദ്ദേശമില്ല"
